Job Description: The Director of Music will be responsible for fostering healthy and growing relationships with God and others through directing, developing and encouraging music whether in person or virtual/online. They will work closely with the Senior Pastor and other staff to create worship that will be inspiring, vibrant and meaningful to our community. The Director should be an experienced musician and leader who is a Christian and demonstrates an active faith life.

Working relationships:

Reports directly to the Senior Pastor
Works collaboratively with other staff and the congregation of other areas of music ministry.

Primary Responsibilities:

Plan and coordinate the music program for Advent Lutheran by providing leadership and resources to the musicians and staff
Participate in the planning of worship and other musical activities in the congregation
Select hymns and music that will align to the liturgical style and key messages to create a meaningful worship experience for members and visitors
Schedule music groups and individual performances for participation in worship
Create slide deck for worship
Schedule and hold weekly rehearsal for musical groups
Oversees and manages the church music library
Maintain and obtain all copyrights needed for music used at Advent Lutheran
Attends staff meetings, occasional staff trainings and retreats
Ensure maintenance of all instruments of the congregation
Determine and submit the annual budget requirement for the music program and oversee the expenditures of the approved budget
Meet with the Senior Pastor for regular supervisory check-ins
Actively recruits people to participate in the musically life of the community
Provide music for funerals, weddings and other special occasions as needed

Qualifications:

Knowledge of Lutheran theology, liturgical practice and use of music in worship
Desired competency in planning and conducting larger scale musical events.
Must be able to work well with others and professionally with staff and congregational members
High organizational and communication skills
Able to direct and supervise others
Proficiency with keyboard/piano
Music degree preferred

What does a typical Sunday morning look like?

We offer a midweek service on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Viewers are invited to enjoy it as a livestream at that time, or as a recording as it fits their schedule. We strongly encourage families to watch and participate in worship together and have conversations about the Bible lesson, hymns, or sermon as they go about their day.

Families with children in preschool up to fifth grade are invited to join our Zoom gatherings for Sunday school and musical instruction on alternating weeks. Please contact the church office at 763-425-4243 to be connected to these resources.

Are there other services I can take part in?

I'm not Lutheran. Can I still attend?

Yes! All are welcome, including but not limited to:

-people who are lifelong Lutherans (or Presbyterians, Methodists, Catholics, Baptists, Episcopalians, etc.)
-people who haven't been to church since their confirmation
-people who have never been to church
-people who are questioning their faith
-people who have this Jesus thing figured out
-people looking for a safe place
-people looking to be welcomed
-people who are married, divorced, straight, gay, old, young, happy, sad, angry, scared, and/or [insert adjective here]

Can I take communion? What about my child?

We believe all who are baptized and desire to take communion are welcome to do so! If you have not been baptized, or if your child is younger than fifth grade, we ask that you please speak with the pastor prior to communing for the first time with us.

Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministry

Job Summary: In this position the Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministry will work with staff and congregation to develop a comprehensive children, youth, and family ministry that implements the mission and goals of Advent Lutheran Church. The Director shall seek to foster Christian community through building relationships with young people that strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ, their knowledge of Scripture, and their commitment to the Christian church. The Director will work in collaboration with the pastors, staff, and the congregation in a shared effort to develop, organize and implement this ministry.

Hours & Compensation: 30 hours/week including Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings and occasional weekend/evening hours as needed. Salary in line with Minneapolis Area Synod Compensation Guidelines. Benefits included.

Responsibilities

Plan and lead the weekly Sunday School program during the school year for PreK-4th grade students
Plan and lead quarterly intergenerational activities for the congregation
Coordinate with Associate Pastor in teaching and leading the Confirmation program (5th-8th grade)
Develop action steps for youth in the congregation to engage more deeply in outreach, worship, and learning
Lead regular Middle School and High School youth group activities that facilitate Christian community andspiritual growth
Facilitate opportunities for youth to engage in intergenerational relationships within the congregation
Plan, organize and implement milestone ministry programs, youth retreats and service trips, ELCA youthgathering trips, and Bible camp ministry participation
Collaborate with staff and volunteers to lead Vacation Bible School
Recruit and empower teams of capable and enthusiastic volunteers
Help youth wrestle with questions about faith
Collaborate with staff in wide range communications
Use technology to gather and communicate with families and volunteers
Attend staff meetings
Maintain children and youth ministry records and assist in keeping the database current
Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Strong personal faith in Jesus Christ and a commitment to the ministry at Advent
Experience working with children and youth• Understanding of or willingness to learn Lutheran (ELCA) theology
Bachelor's Degree preferred• Strong interpersonal communication skills
Ability to work both collaboratively and independently• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
