Betty and Marlin Reiman were drawn to Advent for several reasons. They admired the pastors and enjoyed the Christmas celebrations. They also had friends, who were Advent members and found the community to be friendly and welcoming. They appreciated Advent’s financial stability and the beautiful, open sanctuary, especially when compared to their former dark and closed-in church.
Both Betty and Marlin value Pastor Elizabeth’s preaching and her focus on the Gospel while connecting it to real-life situations of today. They also find Pastor Alexis a fine preacher whose messages often contradict her young age. It is important to them that Advent is a vibrant congregation with opportunities for fellowship like card playing and for reaching out to others like the quilters do. They are impressed that the building is always in use.
There are many ways to volunteer and Betty and Marlin value the feeling of belonging and knowing they are making a difference.
Betty serves on the Advent Endowment Board. This group oversees funds that are given as special donations or memorials. Recently the Endowment Board presented scholarships to three high school graduates, who are Advent members. The Board also gave money to CROSS for a storage unit, purchased a new camera to use in streaming Advent services and events, and gave a donation to a group providing transportation to medical appointments to people in rural communities. Social justice is a prime value of Betty and Marlin and they really like our quarterly Gift of Love program.
Betty plays in the Bell Choir. She shared that this group is very supportive of each other, praying together and honoring each other's prayer requests. Music is a wonderful way to praise God, and Betty says you do not have to be perfect to participate.
A special moment that stands out to Betty and Marlin was when Pastor Peter was called by the congregation as associate pastor. This moment was one of great courage for Pastor Elizabeth as she stepped up to advocate for him. It was controversial and caused some members to leave Advent. They believe that the church needs everyone to belong, and they are pleased that we called a gay pastor. Pastor Peter was a beloved and appreciated pastor at Advent.
In conclusion, Betty and Marlin feel grateful for the sense of community, purpose, and inclusivity they have found at Advent, and they look forward to continuing their journey with the congregation.
